How to Delete Old Emails in Outlook (by Date)
Years of old email eat up your mailbox quota and make search slower. Here’s how to delete everything older than a given date in Outlook.
Method 1: Search with a date filter
Outlook search understands date operators:
- In the search bar, type
received:<=01/01/2024(use your own cutoff date) and press Enter. - Optionally narrow it further, e.g.
received:<=01/01/2024 from:noreply@example.com. - Select the first result, choose Select all, and press Delete.
Other useful ranges:
received:<=06/30/2023— everything on or before that date.received:01/01/2023..12/31/2023— a specific year.
Method 2: Sort by date and select a range
- Click the sort control above the message list and choose Date (oldest first).
- Click the first (oldest) email, scroll to your cutoff, Shift-click the last one to select the range.
- Press Delete.
Method 3: Empty a whole folder up to a point
For folders like Junk or Deleted Items, you can usually right-click the folder and choose Empty folder to clear it entirely.
Free up space, not just the inbox
Old mail is often the reason an Outlook mailbox is full. If your goal is storage, combine a date cutoff with the biggest offenders — delete the oldest emails from the senders who sent the most. Doing that by hand means juggling search filters for every sender.
Sender Sweep makes it one step: filter your whole mailbox to emails older than a date (or a date range), see how many each sender contributed, and bulk-delete them — all in your browser. It’s the fastest way to reclaim space without hunting through folders.
FAQ
Does deleting old emails free up storage immediately? They move to Deleted Items first. Empty that folder (or wait for the 30-day auto-purge) to actually reclaim space.
Can I delete emails older than X but keep certain senders?
Yes — add a from: filter, or use a tool that lets you exclude senders before deleting.
Will this delete emails in subfolders too? Search-based deletion covers the folders you search. Check “All folders” scope if you want everything.
