How to Bulk Mark Emails as Read in Outlook
A five-digit unread count is stressful even when none of it needs action. Marking everything as read is the quickest way to reset — here’s how to do it in bulk in every version of Outlook, without deleting anything.
Mark a whole folder as read
The fastest reset:
- Outlook.com / new Outlook: right-click the folder (e.g. Inbox) in the folder list → Mark all as read.
- Classic Outlook desktop: right-click the folder → Mark All as Read, or select the folder and press Ctrl+A then Ctrl+Q.
That instantly clears the unread badge for that folder.
Mark selected emails as read
To mark just some:
- Click a message, then Ctrl+A to select all in view (or Ctrl+click individual ones).
- Press Ctrl+Q (classic Outlook) or use the toolbar Mark as read.
- In Outlook.com, after Ctrl+A a bar lets you select all in the folder before marking.
Mark as read on mobile
In the Outlook app:
- Press and hold a message to select, tick others, then tap Mark as read.
- Or set a swipe action to “Mark read/unread” (Settings → Swipe options) for one-thumb triage.
Mark a specific sender as read
There’s no built-in “mark all from this sender as read” in Outlook — you’d search from:sender@example.com, select all results, and mark them read, one sender at a time.
Mark as read by sender, in bulk
If your unread count is dominated by a few noisy senders, clearing them by sender is cleaner than nuking the whole folder (which also marks read the things you did want to notice).
Sender Sweep shows every sender with how many of their emails are unread, so you can pick the newsletters and notifications flooding your unread count and mark them all as read in one action — without touching the senders that matter. It runs in your browser, and marking as read only changes the read state; nothing is moved or deleted.
FAQ
How do I mark all emails as read in Outlook at once? Right-click the folder in the folder list and choose Mark all as read. That clears the entire folder’s unread count instantly.
Does marking as read delete or move anything? No — it only changes the read/unread state. The emails stay exactly where they are.
Can I mark all emails from one sender as read? Not natively in one click — search the sender, select all, and mark read. Sender Sweep can do it per-sender in bulk.
